Needless to say, its a delicate task, but I promise, its not impossible (I should know- Ive had a few baboes who were most definitely not my BFFs in my day). Heres how I managed to stay sane- and how you can, too.Lesson 1 Bite Your TongueMost of the time, open communication and honesty is the best policy in a workplace relationship. But, when you have a boss you hate, I highly recommend opting for a more tight-lipped approach- its actually pretty tough to come across as respectfully disagreeing when you despise someones every move.I learned t his the hard way with my first horrible boss. I was a senior member of the team, and the company philosophy was that while my boss was technically in charge, we were all on the same level- you know, the ol were a flat organization mantra. Well, one day I took that to heart and spoke my mind when my boss was being particularly, well, bossy. It did not go over well. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the shock on his face- and when he pulled me into a conference room and reminded me who was in charge, flat organization or not.And you know what? He had a point. Yes, he was a jerk, but he was also my boss, and at the end of the day, he was the one who would determine whether Id head up the next big project or if I got that bonus Id been working so hard to earn. In other words, I shouldve been worrying less about getting my point across- and more about not pissing off the person who could make (or break) my career. Even if your boss encourages you to always speak your mind, trust me, the res a line that probably shouldnt be crossed, especially if whatevers on your mind is telling your boss where to go. Its just like our mothers taught us If you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all.Lesson 2 Blow Off SteamKeeping your mouth shut when youd really like to say your piece can be exhausting, which is exactly how I learned the second lesson in dealing with a boss I despised. I noticed this after putting lesson 1 into full rotation on a daily basis. I started clenching my teeth at work, drinking way too much coffee, and taking out my frustration on innocent colleagues, who had the misfortune of being in my path after a particularly painful tongue-biting session with my boss. Fortunately- or maybe unfortunately- one of my teammates was in the same boat as far as his relationship with our boss, and gave me some good advice after hearing me grind my teeth from across the room. He casually walked over to my desk, and asked if Id tried kickboxing. I hadnt, but had to admit that taking out all that pent up frustration on a punching bag that did not care what I said to it (and definitely had no say in my upcoming review) sounded pretty darn good. I signed up for a class that same night, and wow, what a difference it made. For about a year, twice a week, I would let an ex-Marine scream orders at me while I punched and kicked the daylights out of inanimate objects. Not only did I get in fantastic shape, but every encounter with my boss became progressively less frustrating. Sure, I still had to keep my cool at the office, but the fallout afterward was much less pronounced, and lasted a matter of minutes, instead of hours.If you have to force yourself to be nice and hold your tongue, eight hours per day, youre going to need an outlet, so pick an exercise- the more sweat, the better- and commit to it at least a few times per week. Youll find all that anger and frustration just melts away after a good workout, and your boss will be none the wiser.Less on 3 Be a DiplomatIf youre lucky, the first two lessons will get you by most of the time, but occasionally, you may really need to confront your boss on an issue. This happened to me often, as I worked on a small team, and had to deal with my awful manager all day, every day. There were just some times when I had to disagree with him, and it was honestly hard to do without sounding bitchy. Thats when I learned how to be a diplomat. We had TVs all over the office and watched the berichterstattung all day long. One day, there were two world leaders, who clearly did not like one another, sitting together, trying to come to an agreement on something sensitive, like world peace. I thought, hey, if they can do it, maybe I can, too. So, whenever my boss started to push me over the edge, Id pretend I was an ambassador, dealing with a tough situation. I didnt like the situation, or him, but I had to choose my words carefully if I wanted to survive. It became a game for me, a game that soon t ook the sting out of dealing with my boss.Working with people you cant stand is unfortunately a fact of life. But, with a few crafty tricks up your sleeve, your boss will never know how often you considered spitting in his coffee instead hell just know you as a respectful, diplomatic professional- one who just happens to know a lot about boxing.

But, I was intensely focused on the vision of success.Often, we want change but are stuck on a story we’ve been repeating to ourselves on how we aren’t good enough â€" smart enough, educated enough, experienced enough, cute enough, thin enough, likable enough, connected enough or worthy. We adopt these assumptions as facts and play to them. Dreadful.Sure, I could have perseverated on how I wasn’t good enough for any of the CEO positions I’ve held. That was measurably so if you looked at my background versus the job descriptions on paper. So, I didn’t focus on that. I focused on my measurable results. Nobody cared that I didn’t have an MBA when I could close a million-dol lar deal, increase trade show attendance 150%, and raise $10.4 million on the heels of the largest hospital bankruptcy in US history.I became known for turning around organizations that were troubled. I learned that skill through the turnaround of my own financial situation.With more work, I was able to let go of my stuck-story of not being loveable enough. That’s where I found love and where happily ever after happened.The philosophical view is not enough. If theory were enough to sustain desired results we would execute every wise piece of advice we’ve learned in trainings, self-help books and college  for great achievement.Intellectually, we know what we need to do to succeed. If knowledge delivered change we would all be thin, gorgeous, have great careers and relationships and be abundantly happy. We’d easily be able to stop eating sweets and carbs, successfully take job risks that get noticed, stick to a disciplined exercise routine and exhibit compassion for ourselves an d others.Action with a Sense of UrgencyAction is imperative. Period. A sense of urgency is the impetus to action. How will you tie the two together? Research shows that confidence builds by taking risks. An intention to change is not change. Intention is a start but not a finish. Yet we wait for things to be perfect. We strive for excellence. Procrastination takes hold.    We justify failure to launch with excuses that keep us safe. “It’s not the right time.” “I will get to it next quarter.” Find your driver. Is it the memory of someone who waited too long? Is it for your health? Relationship?Anticipation with No Fear of RejectionThe best leaders know how to anticipate, act and retool. They analyze and anticipate market trends. They intuitively read people’s reactions and adjust their executive presence. They instinctively know where to be and how to behave. It’s risky to position one’s self, product or service before the need is obvious. It is also far better to be prepared and out ahead of the pack than behind the curve. Yes, sometimes when you anticipate you will be wrong. Invite the feedback and agree on the need to re-evaluate. Nothing makes you stuck in negativity forever but your own ego and stubbornness. Anticipate and adjust in real time â€" not when it is too late.Letting Go without JudgmentRelease the need you cling to that keeps you safe. Of course, change is difficult. As more offices embrace casual clothing, the boundaries of comfort are something every office-worker has wondered about: what does “appropriate” office clothing mean?It depends heavily on the workplace, of course, in the way that hoodies are standard at Google but rare at IBM or McKinsey.United Airlines stepped right into the center of the controversy this weekend when a customer, Shannon Watts, noted young girls boarding in Denver being pulled aside and asked to change their clothes before they were allowed on the airplane. The girls were wearing leggings, according to Watts. Their father, wearing shorts, was not asked to change his clothes.After hours of outrage, the reason emerged: the girls and their father were flying as friends and family of United staff, and the airline keeps a dress code in place for those passholders. Here is the policy:The disclosure of the policy did very little to so othe the outrage, as many noted that banning leggings (most likely under the rubric of “form-fitting spandex” in the policy above) is hardly suited to world in which leggings are considered actual, respectable clothes.  In its public replies to irritated passengers (and would-be customers), United doubled down on its policy.The airline clarified that the rules did not apply to paying customers - only to pass holders, who were presumably thought to be representing the company even when off-duty. Even so, United hit upon the paradox many companies face: dress codes that may considered regressive.In a Medium post, Watts said the policy was not a good one: “I was outraged and disappointed by the lack of respect and customer-oriented strategy from United Airlines…as a frequent traveler and a mother of four daughters who live and work in yoga pants, I couldn’t help but wonder why the father?- ?who was wearing shorts?- ?was allowed to board the plane showing so much leg. How man y times has United stopped young boys or men for ‘improper’ clothing?”Watt’s objections highlight a trend in recent years of resistance to strict office dress codes. A recent example of  against such company policies is the case of Nicola Thorp, who refused to wear high heels to her office despite the dress-code requirement - and, in the words of one newspaper, “ignited a rebellion.” Even JP Morgan, one of the oldest and largest banks in the country, has embraced “business casual” for every day, according to a memo last year. The bank’s new dress code allows “polo shirts, casual pants, capris, and dress sandals.”JP Morgan, does, however, still ban leggings - which makes us ask, what do corporate HR departments have against leggings?“People always seem to want to put a disclaimer on their leggings-wearing. In any discussion about leggings, someone will inevitably croak that they’re not pants. Fashion publications, including ours, often note that they’re more comfortable than truly fashionable - but if Beyoncé and Gigi Hadid can pull them off, why can’t we?” asked Refinery29’s Natalie Gontcharova, who wore leggings to work every day for a year.There’s no question that leggings have moved up in the world. Once considered lazy weekend wear, or good only for jogging, the legging has upgraded. The legging has become a catch-all term for “stretchy pants for women,” and guess what: stretchy pants for women are everywhere.  Upscale retailer Nordstrom has an entire section devoted to leggings you can wear to work. There are  designer pairs of work-appropriate leggings that cost $450, and in cool workplaces, leather leggings or the leggings-plus-blazer  combo is a chic option. Shoe designer Tamara Mellon has even made boots that are just really long leggings.Just because something is available, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s appropriate. But high-ranking women have embraced leggings as appropriate work wear. St. Louis-based entrepreneur Erica Harris told The Today Show that she regularly wears leggings to work, dressed up with a nice sweater. Glamour magazine advocates pairing leggings with brogues or military jackets for work.Variations of leggings are also office-appropriate in many places, from “jeggings” to the trousers produced by one company, BetaBrand: yoga pants that look like office-worthy dress pants.
