7 Mindset Changes Successful People Learn to Embrace

7 Mindset Changes Successful People Learn to Embrace7 Mindset Changes Successful People Learn to EmbraceMore than anything, your mindset determines your success. If Oprah had a negative mindset, her empire wouldve never gotten off the ground, and Steve Jobs wouldve been yet another burnt out and fired founder, if it wasnt for his determined thinking.Granted, youre probably not walking around like Eeyore or acting incredibly negative- but who couldnt use some mora success?Making these simple mindset changes can help you achieve the radical success youre after. Bonus Theyre easier to implement than you may think. Check them out for yourself1. Turn Envy Into AdmirationTo change bad habits, we must study the habits of successful role models, said Jack Canfield, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and author ofThe Success Principles How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.How many times have you done the opposite of this, and found yourself jealous of someone else, maybe with out even realizing it?Our natural tendency when we see people who have mora success is to envy them. Sometimes this envy can turn into belittling their achievements She only got that promotion because shes related to the CMO.Successful people, however, refuse to let envy take over. They train themselves to remember that theres always more to someones story than meets the eye, and they use this perspective to feel genuinely happy for others who achieve success. Even better, they finda mentor(or a few) to inspire them to reach higher, and you can too.2. Turn Procrastination Into AchievementProcrastination can come in many forms and, at one point or another, weve all given into it. We can fall into the procrastination trap by just thinking about one word in our minds later.Heres a super simple mindset shift for making yourself more successful in no time Every day, tackle the task that you dread the fruchtwein first. If you want to become a more successful person, eliminate that word fro m your daily planning and decide to knock out the most overwhelming task with your morning coffee. Whatever the task is- and whatever the day is- wake up and, as Nike said, just do it.3. Turn Gut Reactions Into Level-Headed ThinkingWhile many of us face the urge to procrastinate tasks, theres a contrasting mindset thats just as easy to fall into Making rash decisions based on emotions. But, as the popular saying goes Dont make a permanent decision from your temporary emotion. In my many years in finance, Ive seen people throw decades of financial planning out the window because of their emotions. And its beyond easy to do this in a stressful workplace, too. When successful people find themselves in situations where theyre extremely angry, sad, or frustrated, they let themselves ride out those emotions without acting on them. The simple act of waiting to make a decision until youve returned to a levelheaded state can play a huge role in the success you achieve.4. Turn Defensiveness Into CuriosityRaise your hand if you justlovegetting feedback and critiques. No one?Okay, so maybe hearing criticism is a little difficult for all of us. But, in order to become more successful, its necessary. And, to become radically successful, you may even need to startaskingfor feedback.Forbes found a strong correlation betweenleaders who asked for feedback and leaders ranked highest for effectiveness. Leaders who were in the lower 10% of people who asked for feedback were only ranked as 17% effective by their peers and employees. Meanwhile, leaders who were in the top 10% of people who asked for feedback received an average effectiveness rating of 83%.Rather than fearing feedback and defending any critiques, try to be curious of how others view your performance. This curiosity and the process of asking for feedback can be difficult, but ultimately it will provide insight that could be the difference between reaching your goals and falling short.5. Turn Talent Into HabitsStudies have found that shifting from afixed mindset to a growth mindsetresults in radical success. If you arent familiar with these terms A growth mindset is one that believes intelligence and skill can be developed, while a fixed mindset is one that believes intelligence and skill are static.A person with a fixed mindset is likely to think, Im a naturally talented writer, so its likely that I will achieve great things in the writing field. While, at first, there may seem to be nothing wrong with this mindset, it only applies to one niche. This same persons fixed mindset will also think, Im not naturally talented at public speaking, so its unlikely that I will achieve great things in public speaking.Having a fixed mindset will convince you that you cant succeed before you even try, while implementing a growth mindset will encourage you to put in the time and effort to succeed. So start shifting your thinking toward growth today.6. Turn Tasks Into SkillsWhats a task that you hate being assigned to at work? For some people, the idea of being in meetings all day sounds dreadful (yup, Ive been there). For others, being asked to organize spreadsheets sounds like a snoozefest.Jeffrey Pfeffer, who has been a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business since 1979, has something to say about this. In his article aboutbecoming successful by changing your mindset, he talked about how being assigned complex, time-consuming, and even dull projects is bound to happen to everyone, but the difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person is how they approach it.Pfeffer left his readers with some advice you need to listen to The next time you find yourself at some meeting or event, the next time you get what you think is a boring, trivial assignment, consider how your mindset affects your approach.7. Turn Success Into HumilityFinally, one of the most important things you can do as you become more successful and earn more leadership roles is to channel that succe ss into humility.More than50% of people have left a job because of their manager. Have you? Its said that people dont quit jobs- they quit bosses. If youve ever been in that position, consider the qualities of that boss that left a bad impression. One of the most common traits cited by people who loathe their bosses is simply a lack of empathy.John Maxwell, leadership author and speaker, characterizes good leaders as the following A person who takes a little more than their share of the blame and a little less than their share of the credit.Remembering this perspective and adopting a humble mindset will allow you to influence others to become more successful, and it may even carve the path for others to view you as their own role model for success. What do you think of these mental changes? 10 Traditional Sayings to Remember While Job Seeking

10 Traditional Sayings to Remember While Job Seeking10 Traditional Sayings to Remember While Job SeekingDifficult times during a job search can cause job seekers to question everything they hear. However, throughout the course of a career, there are certain things that never change. They never change even while the way people talk and dress for work and job interviews seems to change every weekRead these 10 traditional sayings that are true for job seekers in 2018, as much as they were 50 or 60 years ago.10. Expect someone to give you the cold shoulderHow it applies to job seekingThere will be times when companies seem to disappear after an interview. You hear nothing from them, even when the interview seemed to be a success. They gave you the cold shoulderHistory of the sayingThe cold shoulder today is considered rude. But it was actually regarded as a polite gesture in medieval England. The host of a feast would let his guests know it was time to leave by giving them a cold piece of meat from the shoulder of beef, mutton, or pork.9. Know how to break the ice in your new jobHow it applies to job seekingBreaking the ice is a gesture made to begin a friendship or relationship on a positive note, something job seekers may think about after accepting an offer and discussing moving forward.History of the sayingBefore trains or cars, port cities that relied on trade suffered during the winter because of frozen rivers preventing commercial ships from entering the city. Small ships known as icebreakers would rescue the icebound ships by breaking the ice and creating a path for them to follow.8. People in glass houses shouldnt throw stonesHow it applies to job seekingNever speak negatively about your previous boss during job interviews. You appear to be someone who tends to attack others unfairly, which is bad for team chemistry and many other reasons. mora so, someone looking for a job is in no position to accuse others of wrong-doing.History of the sayingThe saying can be traced back to Geoffrey Chaucers Troilus and Criseyde. The original intent was to say, Those are vulnerable should not attack others.7. Dont get caught red-handed when it comes to your resumeHow it applies to job seekingNever lie on your resume. The brde thing you want during an interview is to be caught red-handed in a lie because of your resume.History of the sayingThis saying comes from an old law that stated a butcher had to be caught with the animals blood on his hands in order to be convicted of butchering an animal he/she did not own.6. Go the whole nine yards in your new jobHow it applies to job seekingThis simply means, Always do your best Whether it be a job or job interviews, always make the most of every opportunity.History of the sayingWorld War II Fighter pilots received a 9-yard chain of ammunition. Therefore, when a pilot used all of his ammunition on one target, he gave it the whole 9 yards.5. Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him to fish you feed him for a lifetimeHow it applies to job seekingNever expect any company to simply give you a job. If the job is earned through your efforts, you will last longer in the company because you respect something more that you worked for. Anything job given to you without any effort can be taken away just as fast.History of the sayingThe origin of the quote is highly contested. The belief is it first appeared as a principle of alleviating poverty by facilitating self-sufficiency in the 12th-century by philosopher Maimonides in his eight degrees in the duty of charity. But it has been translated into so many cultures since then that every culture can stake a claim in its origin.4. Dont rub people the wrong wayHow it applies to job seekingWalking into an interview acting overly confident and rude, or not confident at all, can rub people the wrong way. Basically, it is the opposite of making a good impression on companies and hiring managers.History of the sayingIn colonial America, servants were required to both wet and dry-rub the oak-board floors each week.If you did this against the grain of the wood, streaks would form, making the wood look awful to the homeowner.3. Dont put the cart before the horseHow it applies to job seekingSometimes we see jobs we want so badly we are willing to apply even though we are not qualified. Skills and trades have to be learned first. A new resume is in order or some interview prep is required. Going after a job before you are prepared is putting the cart before the horse.History of the sayingThe earliest known reference to putting the cart before the horse comes in John Heywoods A dialogue containing the number in effect of all the proverbs in the English tongue, 1589.Ultimately, this saying means, Avoid disrupting the logical order of things.2. Show your true colors during an interviewHow it applies to job seekingAlways show your best self in an interview that you plan to bring to work every day. Let them see your true colors so t hey know exactly what makes you special and valuable to a company.History of the sayingWarships used to fly multiple flags to confuse their enemies. However, the rules of warfare stated that a ship had to hoist its true flag before firing. Therefore, they showed their true colors.1. Dont spill the beans about your previous companyHow it applies to job seekingWhen you are in an interview the last thing you want to do is abflug revealing secrets or speak negatively about the company. You can get yourself in trouble with previous companies, or worse, make the new company think you cannot be trusted.History of the sayingIn Ancient Greece, beans were used to vote for candidates entering various organizations. One container for each candidate was set out before the group members to place a white bean in the container if they approved of the candidate and a black bean if not.Sometimes a clumsy voter would accidentally knock over the jar, revealing all of the beans and allowing everyone to see the otherwise confidential votes. So, if you have a confidentiality agreement or you just do not approve of your last company, do not spill the beans and allow everyone to see what you know

Managing Cultural and Emotional Contradictions at Work

Managing Cultural and Emotional Contradictions at Work Managing Cultural and Emotional Contradictions at Work But ambivalent feelings, unlike colliding cultural beliefs held by the same person, do not create contradictions.Thats because it can be true that a job or a pizza is great in one respect, such as the great pay or the sauce, but also true that it is not so great in anotzu sich, different respect, e.g., the horrible work load or the unwanted fattening calories. So, theres no contradiction in hating one thing about pizzas and loving another.Nonetheless, emotions cannot- despite being somehow oppositeliterally contradict each other, since they are not statements of belief that can be characterized as true or false. On the other hand, truly contradictory beliefs (within as well as between psyches), instructions and tasks (un)consciously routinely impede and burden job performance- often with a cultural surce, including national, rtlich and work cultures. For example, as translatio ns and implementation of beliefs, office instructions of the I want you to. form can rightly be regarded as contradictory when logically they cannot all be obeyed and amount to I (dont) want you to..An emotional contradiction, expressed in statements, would exist if and only if, for example, we loved and hated exactly the same thing, in exactly the same respect and for exactly the same reasons, e.g., I love and hate my job because it keeps me busy (with no ambivalence about being kept busy). Is this possible?Contradictory Emotions Something the Brain Wont AllowSuch emotional contradictions are, I believe, impossible. Our brain physiology probably wont allow it at all.Thats because specific emotions are immediate physiological responses to specific internal or external stimuli, cues and information. When an emotion changes, the associated stimuli, cues and information must change as a cause or consequence of that emotional change. That is to say, when an emotional change occurs or diff erence exists, it is to be expected that it will be the result or cause of changes in perceptions of and beliefs about situations, objects, relationships, etc., usually direct and immediate.(Some effective psychotherapy is based on that connection to change an emotion, change the beliefs and perceptions, if not also the environments and brain chemistry, that trigger it.)Hence it is impossible, or at least unlikely in the extreme (barring weird effects of weird drugs, medication, Zen meditation, hypnosis, etc.) that we could ever have opposite emotional responses to exactly the same thing with no ambivalence whatsoever. I love you and hate you (or my job) for one and the same reason No way.Emotional ambivalence? Yes, it is possible. Emotional contradictions? No.But Beliefs Are Another (Brain) MatterHowever, beliefs, as opposed to emotions, are an entirely different matter. Somehow ur brains are perfectly capable of believing one thing and its denial, mostly because of ignoring, denyi ng or being unaware of the missing links or logic that would directly connect, compare and expose them as contradictory. Many, in Western cultures, lament factory farming, but devour fried chicken. The inconsistency here is hidden by the logical, evidential and physical distance between the processing plants and our plates and palates, and is overridden or hidden by the savory sauce.Although this cultural and personal tension is likely to be experienced as emotional ambivalence- its tasty, but nasty, great ends, cruel means, the unalterable bottom line, from the standpoint of decision making, action and the underlying beliefs, is I should eat chicken and I should not eat chicken, a clear contradiction, irrespective of whether it is based on ambivalence.Expressed as exhortations, the clash becomes Eat chicken and Dont eat chicken Since these are not true or false, they are not statements that can contradict each other, but they are absolutely incompatible actions. One of the most commo n and disconcerting examples of a very stressful workplace-culture contradiction is the all-too-prevalent shifted goalpost syndrome, created by the all-too-familiar manager or boss who assigns one task only to redefine or reject it upon completion. Even though this is a sequence of inconsistent decisions, it is also a set of beliefs, and therefore can be regarded as a workplace contradiction This job should and should not be done this way.Karen Horneys Cultural Contradiction-Neurosis NexusA wonderful tool for understanding and analyzing cultural contradictions welches developed by the psychoanalyst Karen Horney, and is a concept that seems to be culture-free (i.e., universally valid, as opposed to culture-bound).In her 1937 book, The Neurotic Personality of Our Time, Horney identifies cultural contradictions as a trigger of neurosis- contradictions that almost all members of a culture are exposed to and to which some, unable to ignore, cope with or compartmentalize them, succumb by developing neurotic behavior patterns, including self-defeating, vacillating or paralyzing ones spawned by such contradictions.Such behaviors can be caused by (un)consciously accepting contradictory culturally-implanted beliefs, e.g., when a self-described average person believes both I must try to be really special and Ill never really be special. This contradiction often results in trying (and necessarily failing) to be special in the same way as everyone else is trying, by attempting to do two incompatible things 1. Be unique 2. Adopt mass-marketed (and therefore) obsolescent, passing and ultimately self-defeating symbols and forms of uniqueness, such as piercings, tattoos, the latest iPhone, a BMW a GQ-Calvin Klein image or cookie-cutter MTV gangsta rapper attitudes. When means and ends are inconsistent in this way, and efforts are guaranteed to be self-defeating, the stage is set for neurosis (even if only mild), much of which is characterized by such self-defeat, as the self bec omes its worst enemy, e.g., by literally starving oneself to death in order to look healthier or sexier, or by demanding respect as special for looking and behaving like every other off-the-rack Nike-psyche mall-prowling thug.Writing within a culture that has changed, but not completely, Horney paid particular attention to the American contradiction between the trumpeted exhortation to sacrifice oneself or at least cooperate (in her day, more commonly heard in Sunday school and in church) and the diametrically opposite exhortation to look out for number one, to unswervingly strive for Charlie Sheenish winning and to fiercely compete (a psychological staple of fiercely competitive elite schools and individual professional sports, such as boxing).Such intense competitiveness is perhaps just as, if not more ferocious in 2012, given job markets (nearly) as bleak as those of 1937, exacerbated by the much greater number of under- and unemployed post-secondary graduates with higher degrees and correspondingly higher expectations. As for the other half of the contradiction- self-sacrifice, intense media coverage of self-sacrificing heroes (as rare, necessary reminders to put others before oneself) partially fill whatever cultural vacuum has been created by dwindling Sunday school attendance.More ExamplesAnother example of American cultural contradiction In the days of the U.S. draft, military culture collided with the then prevailing educational culture to the extent that the think for yourself critical and reflective ideology of university education clashed with the essential obey, without question, I dont know, but Ive been told mind set required for an army to function. For some caught in that bind, the mental and emotional squeeze challenged their adaptive skills and resilience, with some risk of discharge- emotional and/or administrative.A virtually identical clash is deeply embedded within U.S. culture and the American psyche In the form of a perceived and persist ent collision between public education and private religion.Educational and geschftliches miteinander demands for critical scientific thinking and empirical evidence collide with the demands for and of blind religious or metaphysical faith, manifested, for example, in the endless evolution vs. special creation/intelligent design debate that should have ended with the Clarence Darrow Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925.When such conflicting norms are internalized in an individual, the contradiction becomes personal, as well as cultural, e.g., when exhortations to fiercely compete and cooperate with everyone are internalized as rules of behavior. For some, that conflict is damaging. For many, if not most, others, there are ways out of the conflict. In China, this kind of conceptual and emotional clash may exist in anyone who has been unable to compartmentalize and isolate from each other the clearly colliding and pervasive ideologies of unleashed competitive entrepreneurial capitalism and offic ial cooperative political communism, or traditional filial and sober Confucian conservatism with modern self-indulgent and frivolous materialism.Techniques of Emotional and Logical Evasion The Super Bowl and SupermenOf course, with respect to the competition-cooperation contradiction, the most common solution is to cooperate with an in-group and compete with an out-group. Thats one reason why the Super Bowl is so popular. The game vividly reinforces while mitigating and partially evading that contradictory compete-cooperate model and message, as players display equally superhuman levels of cooperation and competition, thereby resolving what would otherwise be very nagging and awkward tension in the American psyche. It works for the Green Bay Packers it works for IBM, it works for the average American employee and Little League kid who wants to be the star of the team.Within the narrower in-group, cultural contradictions can also be repackaged and re-experienced as more reasonable and manageable emotional ambivalence- the kind of diametrically opposite, yet mixed feelings typical of 12-year-old boys when they first start to think about girls Eeeewww and Ooooo. For example, in some cultures many, if not the majority of men both intensely fear and deeply desire women- the same women or woman (but for different reasons). What would otherwise have to be recognized as contradictory beliefs are reduced to acceptable ambivalence. They may be very predisposed to believe that when their (super-)masculine power has been lost to a woman, their remaining power must be exerted (in a state of denial, if not also anger or fear). As a result, they are under cultural and psychological pressure to resolve the psychologically hidden but logically obvious contradiction between Men are stronger than women and Men are weaker than women.Hence, some very confused and self-defeating male behaviors and feelings seem all but inevitable. Among them is the bizarre elevation of women to the sta tus of precious family jewels that must therefore be kept under lock and key like common chattel, or cut in unnatural ways to enhance their value, e.g., cosmetic surgery or worse.A mild, relatively innocuous version of this is our male custom of opening doors for women Do we do it as an expression of our power over them (since they need our help to push the door open), or their power over us (as their devoted servants)?- a question that the characterization of the practice as gentlemanly behavior tastefully suppresses and sidesteps.Workplace Management of ContradictionsIn workplace culture, whenever an employee is torn between helping and competing with, if not sabotaging, the new guy, (s)he is experiencing a cultural contradiction in a very vivid, if not articulated way I want to help, but without grooming somebody to replace me or make me look bad.If the in-group solution is unappealing or impractical, providing just enough help to create gratitude, but not a serious competitor, i s a second way to resolve the contradiction. The same problem and solution are sometimes evident in the relationship with clients. Thats how some extremely competitive and less spiritual martial arts instructors may attempt to resolve the contradiction between believing they should and should not train others to be better than themselves.By slowing down the belt-awarding process, and spending way too much class time practicing and repeating one basic kick (something that I was too often forced to do as a karate student-client), they, by such an evasion, delay the day they will have to confront the tension between their beliefs (while, as a bonus, maximizing total fees paid by disciple-clients)- something I really disliked and give an emphatic thumbs-down.Without a trace of ambivalence or contradiction.

How to Play Nicely With a Boss You Hate - The Muse

How to Play Nicely With a Boss You Hate - The MuseHow to Play Nicely With a Boss You Hate One of the best parts of being an adult is that, for the most part, we get to choose our friends and avoid our enemies. If you come across people you dont play nicely with, you simply steer clear of them, right? Sure, unless that someone turns out to be your anfhrer. Not only can you not avoid this person, but you actually have to try to impress him or her. Needless to say, its a delicate task, but I promise, its not impossible (I should know- Ive had a few baboes who were most definitely not my BFFs in my day). Heres how I managed to stay sane- and how you can, too.Lesson 1 Bite Your TongueMost of the time, open communication and honesty is the best policy in a workplace relationship. But, when you have a boss you hate, I highly recommend opting for a more tight-lipped approach- its actually pretty tough to come across as respectfully disagreeing when you despise someones every move.I learned t his the hard way with my first horrible boss. I was a senior member of the team, and the company philosophy was that while my boss was technically in charge, we were all on the same level- you know, the ol were a flat organization mantra. Well, one day I took that to heart and spoke my mind when my boss was being particularly, well, bossy. It did not go over well. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the shock on his face- and when he pulled me into a conference room and reminded me who was in charge, flat organization or not.And you know what? He had a point. Yes, he was a jerk, but he was also my boss, and at the end of the day, he was the one who would determine whether Id head up the next big project or if I got that bonus Id been working so hard to earn. In other words, I shouldve been worrying less about getting my point across- and more about not pissing off the person who could make (or break) my career. Even if your boss encourages you to always speak your mind, trust me, the res a line that probably shouldnt be crossed, especially if whatevers on your mind is telling your boss where to go. Its just like our mothers taught us If you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all.Lesson 2 Blow Off SteamKeeping your mouth shut when youd really like to say your piece can be exhausting, which is exactly how I learned the second lesson in dealing with a boss I despised. I noticed this after putting lesson 1 into full rotation on a daily basis. I started clenching my teeth at work, drinking way too much coffee, and taking out my frustration on innocent colleagues, who had the misfortune of being in my path after a particularly painful tongue-biting session with my boss. Fortunately- or maybe unfortunately- one of my teammates was in the same boat as far as his relationship with our boss, and gave me some good advice after hearing me grind my teeth from across the room. He casually walked over to my desk, and asked if Id tried kickboxing. I hadnt, but had to admit that taking out all that pent up frustration on a punching bag that did not care what I said to it (and definitely had no say in my upcoming review) sounded pretty darn good. I signed up for a class that same night, and wow, what a difference it made. For about a year, twice a week, I would let an ex-Marine scream orders at me while I punched and kicked the daylights out of inanimate objects. Not only did I get in fantastic shape, but every encounter with my boss became progressively less frustrating. Sure, I still had to keep my cool at the office, but the fallout afterward was much less pronounced, and lasted a matter of minutes, instead of hours. If you have to force yourself to be nice and hold your tongue, eight hours per day, youre going to need an outlet, so pick an exercise- the more sweat, the better- and commit to it at least a few times per week. Youll find all that anger and frustration just melts away after a good workout, and your boss will be none the wiser.Less on 3 Be a DiplomatIf youre lucky, the first two lessons will get you by most of the time, but occasionally, you may really need to confront your boss on an issue. This happened to me often, as I worked on a small team, and had to deal with my awful manager all day, every day. There were just some times when I had to disagree with him, and it was honestly hard to do without sounding bitchy. Thats when I learned how to be a diplomat. We had TVs all over the office and watched the berichterstattung all day long. One day, there were two world leaders, who clearly did not like one another, sitting together, trying to come to an agreement on something sensitive, like world peace. I thought, hey, if they can do it, maybe I can, too. So, whenever my boss started to push me over the edge, Id pretend I was an ambassador, dealing with a tough situation. I didnt like the situation, or him, but I had to choose my words carefully if I wanted to survive. It became a game for me, a game that soon t ook the sting out of dealing with my boss.Working with people you cant stand is unfortunately a fact of life. But, with a few crafty tricks up your sleeve, your boss will never know how often you considered spitting in his coffee instead hell just know you as a respectful, diplomatic professional- one who just happens to know a lot about boxing.

3 tips for when you know what to do but cant perform

3 tips for when you know what to do but can't perform 3 tips for when you know what to do but can't perform You’ve read what the experts say. You’ve collected the necessary tools. You are committed. You are trying. Yet nothing changes. And you feel stagnant. When I was a divorced single mother of four children under seven-year’s old on welfare, food stamps, and medical assistance, homeless and without an automobile I didn’t have time to go back to school to learn a new profession. I had four hungry mouths hanging open in front of me like baby birds.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Failure wasn’t an option. I decided to cease seeking what was “fair”, stop throwing money away on lawyers and accept that it was a far better use of my energy to focus on succeeding as the sole provider for my children than to expect family court to give anyone a conscience.I had to put a plan together to hold my family together. I felt anxious, dejected and exhausted. I can’t tell you tha t I thought much about planning. There wasn’t time for ideal, only real. There wasn’t room for perfect, only good enough. I knew what I was good at and I knew my weaknesses. I decided to play to my strengths, not be embarrassed to ask for help and I took risks. I was completely vulnerable to failure. But, I was intensely focused on the vision of success.Often, we want change but are stuck on a story we’ve been repeating to ourselves on how we aren’t good enough â€" smart enough, educated enough, experienced enough, cute enough, thin enough, likable enough, connected enough or worthy. We adopt these assumptions as facts and play to them. Dreadful.Sure, I could have perseverated on how I wasn’t good enough for any of the CEO positions I’ve held. That was measurably so if you looked at my background versus the job descriptions on paper. So, I didn’t focus on that. I focused on my measurable results. Nobody cared that I didn’t have an MBA when I could close a million-dol lar deal, increase trade show attendance 150%, and raise $10.4 million on the heels of the largest hospital bankruptcy in US history.I became known for turning around organizations that were troubled. I learned that skill through the turnaround of my own financial situation. With more work, I was able to let go of my stuck-story of not being loveable enough. That’s where I found love and where happily ever after happened. The philosophical view is not enough. If theory were enough to sustain desired results we would execute every wise piece of advice we’ve learned in trainings, self-help books and college  for great achievement.Intellectually, we know what we need to do to succeed. If knowledge delivered change we would all be thin, gorgeous, have great careers and relationships and be abundantly happy. We’d easily be able to stop eating sweets and carbs, successfully take job risks that get noticed, stick to a disciplined exercise routine and exhibit compassion for ourselves an d others.Action with a Sense of UrgencyAction is imperative. Period. A sense of urgency is the impetus to action. How will you tie the two together? Research shows that confidence builds by taking risks. An intention to change is not change. Intention is a start but not a finish. Yet we wait for things to be perfect. We strive for excellence. Procrastination takes hold.    We justify failure to launch with excuses that keep us safe. “It’s not the right time.” “I will get to it next quarter.” Find your driver. Is it the memory of someone who waited too long? Is it for your health? Relationship?Anticipation with No Fear of RejectionThe best leaders know how to anticipate, act and retool. They analyze and anticipate market trends. They intuitively read people’s reactions and adjust their executive presence. They instinctively know where to be and how to behave. It’s risky to position one’s self, product or service before the need is obvious. It is also far better to be prepared and out ahead of the pack than behind the curve. Yes, sometimes when you anticipate you will be wrong. Invite the feedback and agree on the need to re-evaluate. Nothing makes you stuck in negativity forever but your own ego and stubbornness. Anticipate and adjust in real time â€" not when it is too late.Letting Go without JudgmentRelease the need you cling to that keeps you safe. Of course, change is difficult. It’s also faster than the slow decay of dreams, health, relationships, careers, and fulfillment that draws us into hopelessness. Don’t be a passive participant in your own destiny. Discard guilt, and blame. They don’t advance anything but the stuck-story. Draw on the strengths that got you through previous challenges and let go of expectations. You are capable. You are effective. You’ve achieved before and you will now. Accept yourself with all your imperfections. It makes it easier to accept others. The glass isn’t half full or half empty. It’s there for a purpose to put it to use. Drink the water, wash the glass and put it away. You can pull it out when you’re thirsty from having all the new fun you’ll be having.Have the executive presence of high performing leaders with unflappable grace without the stress by getting  Mary  Lee’s FREE eBook ‘Be the New SMART Leader.” Click here.Mary  Lee  Gannon, ACC, CAE  is an executive coach and corporate CEO who helps busy leaders get off the treadmill to nowhere to be more effective, earn more, be  calmer and enjoy  connected relationships with the people who matter while it still matters.  Watch her FREE Master Class training on Three Things to Transform Your Life and Career Right Now at  www.MaryLeeGannon.com.  .bxc.bx-campaign-1012255 .bx-group-1012255-lyDBLV9 {width: 900px;height: 550px;}You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Are leggings appropriate United Airlines steps into dress-code debate

Are leggings 'appropriate' United Airlines steps into dress-code debate Are leggings 'appropriate' United Airlines steps into dress-code debate Leggings: are they real clothes? You may laugh, but this is a matter of heated debate. As more offices embrace casual clothing, the boundaries of comfort are something every office-worker has wondered about: what does “appropriate” office clothing mean?It depends heavily on the workplace, of course, in the way that hoodies are standard at Google but rare at IBM or McKinsey.United Airlines stepped right into the center of the controversy this weekend when a customer, Shannon Watts, noted young girls boarding in Denver being pulled aside and asked to change their clothes before they were allowed on the airplane. The girls were wearing leggings, according to Watts. Their father, wearing shorts, was not asked to change his clothes. After hours of outrage, the reason emerged: the girls and their father were flying as friends and family of United staff, and the airline keeps a dress code in place for those passholders. Here is the policy:The disclosure of the policy did very little to so othe the outrage, as many noted that banning leggings (most likely under the rubric of “form-fitting spandex” in the policy above) is hardly suited to world in which leggings are considered actual, respectable clothes.  In its public replies to irritated passengers (and would-be customers), United doubled down on its policy. The airline clarified that the rules did not apply to paying customers - only to pass holders, who were presumably thought to be representing the company even when off-duty. Even so, United hit upon the paradox many companies face: dress codes that may considered regressive. In a Medium post, Watts said the policy was not a good one: “I was outraged and disappointed by the lack of respect and customer-oriented strategy from United Airlines…as a frequent traveler and a mother of four daughters who live and work in yoga pants, I couldn’t help but wonder why the father?- ?who was wearing shorts?- ?was allowed to board the plane showing so much leg. How man y times has United stopped young boys or men for ‘improper’ clothing?”Watt’s objections highlight a trend in recent years of resistance to strict office dress codes. A recent example of  against such company policies is the case of Nicola Thorp, who refused to wear high heels to her office despite the dress-code requirement - and, in the words of one newspaper, “ignited a rebellion.” Even JP Morgan, one of the oldest and largest banks in the country, has embraced “business casual” for every day, according to a memo last year. The bank’s new dress code allows “polo shirts, casual pants, capris, and dress sandals.”JP Morgan, does, however, still ban leggings - which makes us ask, what do corporate HR departments have against leggings?“People always seem to want to put a disclaimer on their leggings-wearing. In any discussion about leggings, someone will inevitably croak that they’re not pants. Fashion publications, including ours, often note that they’re more comfortable than truly fashionable - but if Beyoncé and Gigi Hadid can pull them off, why can’t we?” asked Refinery29’s Natalie Gontcharova, who wore leggings to work every day for a year. There’s no question that leggings have moved up in the world. Once considered lazy weekend wear, or good only for jogging, the legging has upgraded. The legging has become a catch-all term for “stretchy pants for women,” and guess what: stretchy pants for women are everywhere.  Upscale retailer Nordstrom has an entire section devoted to leggings you can wear to work. There are  designer pairs of work-appropriate leggings that cost $450, and in cool workplaces, leather leggings or the leggings-plus-blazer  combo is a chic option. Shoe designer Tamara Mellon has even made boots that are just really long leggings.Just because something is available, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s appropriate. But high-ranking women have embraced leggings as appropriate work wear. St. Louis-based entrepreneur Erica Harris told The Today Show that she regularly wears leggings to work, dressed up with a nice sweater. Glamour magazine advocates pairing leggings with brogues or military jackets for work.Variations of leggings are also office-appropriate in many places, from “jeggings” to the trousers produced by one company, BetaBrand: yoga pants that look like office-worthy dress pants. The brand WhoWhatWear has written about how to accessorize leggings for office-appropriate looks.Yes, we know not all leggings are a good look, as one of our Twitter correspondents pointed out with this simple Google search. But there are good leggings out there, and we suggest it’s time to finally liberate the legging for work. Sweatpants are irredeemable, but the legging has really made an effort to fit in at the office. Now it’s just time for companies like United and JP Morgan to catch up.

5 productivity tips for continuing your education while working

5 productivity tips for continuing your education while working 5 productivity tips for continuing your education while working Thanks to technology the worldwide web has opened up vital knowledge resources to many across the globe. While face-to- face education still takes place in-person in physical classrooms, the internet offers an opportunity for those who may not have the financial or physical resources present.Online learning has become its own industry globally, representing a market value of $107 billion in 2015. That’s over a decade worth of e-learning, a term coined in 1998. As of 2019, half of all college classes are predicted to take place online. Among organizations, e-learning is the second most popular method due to its flexibility of time, cost and resources - 76 percent of organizations use a blended learning approach, and 23 percent of workers move on due to lack of development and training. The e-learning industry is estimated to be worth $331 billion as of 2025, so a bigger question is - how do you, the employee, balance it all if you plan to continue your education while working? Here are a few tips on staying productive.1. Focus on Your Specific DreamsSimone Biles is an inspirational young woman and Olympic Gold medalist who decided not to give up her gymnast dreams, which she’d have to forgo full-time to study at UCLA - Biles chose to study at the University of People (UoPeople) instead which opened up its doors to offer accessible and free education for 20,000, with plans to increase this number. Biles was one of those 20,000. While it sounds like a gimmick, the university is fully-accredited, and Biles became its Global Ambassador. The saying “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” applies poetically to Biles’ story. Don’t waste your time agonizing when a door is closed to you because the timing will be right and you can make your own way. So, focus on your specific dreams instead of castles in the sky that should have, would have or could have been. If Simone Biles can train full-time and get her education, so can you!A word of caution: Online institutions are on the rise, but many professionals still look at them with a conservative and wary eye. Online degrees provide flexibility, but some institutions aren’t accredited and exist more in the form of money-makers and not much else. However, many institutions are reputable. 2. Hone Your Time-Management SkillsTime management is an essential skill in your professional life, and now is the perfect time to hone this skill as you get your education. Even though you feel constrained, you will be hyper-aware of the minutes ticking by and what you waste your time on.Channel your energy into being a self-starter and accountable. Start with your syllabus and mark down all the milestone and due dates. From there, log in three to four times a week to stay on top of assignments and discussions. Estimate how long it’ll take to complete assignments, down to your log in times and engagement in discussions. Find a form or organizational structure that works for you and stick to it.3. Don’t Waste Time on Social MediaYou may feel tempted to log in to your social media accounts when you feel bored or stressed. It’s natural to want to check up on friends and family and laugh at silly memes. It’s also natural to let time slip away from you on these platforms.Three billion people in the world are on social media, spending an average of two hours daily liking and tweeting. Every minute, half a million Snapchat photos and tweets are shared. Imagine how much of that stream you perceive as you scroll by for those two hours. No wonder your brain feels tired and you feel stressed. Humanity possesses a love-hate relationship with social media. In one survey of 1,800, women revealed they were more stressed than men on social media, and Twitter proved a coping mechanism for women. Yet, stress levels incrementally increase when you read about bad weather, or someone’s bad day on social media - or engage in negative interactions online. So, manage your time and emotions on these platforms. How do you engage online? How do you feel during and after? Use apps to track your wasted time, and restrict your engagement to specific times of the week with a time limit. Consider a social media fast until you get into the swing of balancin g your new schedule.4. Get Out Into the GreenThe benefits of getting out into nature are multifold, from decreased stress levels to boosted concentration, memory retention and productivity. One study revealed a 20 percent increase in short-term memory when participants took a stroll in an arboretum rather than in a busy city street filled with concrete. Meanwhile, your stress hormone levels and heart rate decrease as your concentration and productivity levels increase. Though looking at nature photos help restore your mental energy, there’s nothing like the real deal. Schedule time to get out into the green of Mother Nature, whether you plan a social activity or read your textbook in the park.5. Multitask WiselyPeople are for and against multitasking. When you try to exercise too much of your mental energy, you will deplete it along with other reserves you try to tap into to stay focused. What are your “non-brain” times? Is it when you’ve got a pot on the stove or laundry in the wash? Is it as you rinse dishes? These are typically activities you slow down or go on autopilot for, and that lends a naturally receptive state and flow to the swing of your learning. So, pull out your flashcards and other materials, and take a gander at them as you tackle tasks in the “non-brain” flow of the day. These five productivity tips will see you through each day as you strive to meet your personal and professional goals. Don’t give up on your dreams because one avenue appears shut to you - that’s a sign that another one awaits, especially one you can create.Sarah Landrum is the founder of  Punched Clocks, a leading career advice blog. How to Deal With Work Burnout

How to Deal With Work Burnout How to Deal With Work Burnout Even if you haven’t put a label on it, chances are you will experience work burnout more than once in your career. In our current era of constant connectivity, the prevalence of feeling overextended and stressed out seems like the new normal for many of us. But if you’re feeling under pressure on the job, how do you know if this is just a passing phase or something more serious? Burnout is defined as “exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation, usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration.” How it manifests - and how it feels - can impact each of us in different ways. Let it fester and you risk it building to the point where you feel defeated and isolated, especially if you’re facing what may appear to be an insurmountable workload. If you’re experiencing work burnout, here are some tips that will help: Don’t ignore work burnout Pretending you don't have an issue won't make the problem go away - it’s more likely to make things worse. When you’re suffering from work burnout, it’s tough to find the energy to put into finding a solution. On top of that, it’s common to feel that the causes of your burnout are beyond your control. To prevent the symptoms from escalating, make a commitment to recognizing them. Warning signs include a negative attitude or apathy toward your work, constant exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, and feelings of ineffectiveness. Give yourself a break This can feel counterproductive. If you’re super busy, the prospect of taking time out feels like it will only set you back. Don’t fall into that trap. When you’re experiencing work burnout, it’s more important than ever to take breaks to reflect and recharge. Go for a walk or do an activity you enjoy. If you tend to work into the night, leave your desk a little earlier and do something else. In my experience, I’ve found that it’s next to impossible to produce your best work when you are tired, stressed or demotivated. When I feel overwhelmed and mentally exhausted the last thing I want to do is exercise, but ironically that’s the thing that always helps me pull through it. Throwing on my running shoes, even when I really don’t want to, is the best way to shift my mindset. Taking a break also gives you time to ponder what’s fueling the work burnout. Ask yourself if it’s potentially a fleeting issue linked only to a new project or recent change at work - or is it something that’s been brewing for a long time? SEARCH OUR JOB OPENINGS Assess your personal and professional priorities Over time, our priorities can shift. How you balanced life in the past might no longer be beneficial or feasible. List your top personal and professional priorities, then examine how your current career path lines up with them. This makes it easier to identify what you want to pursue and what you want to change. It can also help refine how you work, making the process more rewarding and effective. Ask for help Asking for help and admitting you’re struggling can seem scary, but don’t be afraid to do it. If you feel that the culture of where you work is directly impacting your well-being, seek help or input from outside of that sphere. Commiserating with others who have been through what you’re dealing with can be cathartic and motivating. Someone with an objective, outsiders’ viewpoint can help you determine whether the problem is you or the job. Start with the small stuff Wishing for something to be different is not the same as taking action. So jot down some concrete short-term changes you could make quickly to address your work burnout and the steps that would be required to accomplish them. Then get to it. Reconfiguring old habits takes great effort. Improvements may not be noticeable immediately, but slowly moving in the right direction builds momentum. For example, if you set a goal to leave the office earlier to get more exercise or explore mindfulness, hold yourself accountable to actually hit the gym or have a brief meditation session when you get home. Get more sleep I’m with Arianna Huffington, author of The Sleep Revolution, on this one. Getting more sleep is essential, as it’s the gateway to increased productivity, happiness and smarter decision making. Cultivating a solid sleep schedule isn’t as simple as it should be, but it’s an investment that pays dividends. Manage expectations Work burnout is tough. And it’s a feeling that’s often paired with a deep-seated fear that you aren’t meeting your boss’s, client’s or team’s expectations. Even worse, we are often secretly afraid we’re not meeting our own (often unrealistic) expectations. You may need to reassess the amount of pressure you’re putting on yourself. Life is short, but it doesn’t mean your career needs to be a race to the finish. Slow down, consider whether you’re too hard on yourself, and find the pace and way of working that’s best for you. Lawsuit alleges companys college campus recruiting is ageist

Lawsuit alleges company's college campus recruiting is ageist Lawsuit alleges company's college campus recruiting is ageist Employers looking for potential hires on college campuses has been a common practice for years and an effective recruitment tactic. However, one group of people is not very happy about it: The 40-and-over working crowd. The Wall Street Journal reported on a lawsuit against PricewaterhouseCoopers by a group of older male workers. The suit alleges that by recruiting at colleges, the company has hired a disproportionate amount of younger workers in the tax and assurance units of the company, which has, therefore, hurt the plaintiffs.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day?
